Access
Oxford Scholarship Online (OSO) is available onsite and offsite to all academic members of IALS Library.
Content
IALS Library subscribes to the law collection on OSO. For subjects other than law, only abstracts and tables of contents can be accessed.
The law collection consists largely of scholarly monographs, but also includes some more practitioner-oriented works. It covers UK law, EU law, foreign law, international law, comparative law, and the philosophy of law.
Each OSO law title is individually listed on the IALS Library Catalogue.
Searching
OSO opens on the Advanced Search page, with the law collection selected. Advanced Search allows you to search by author, title, key words, words in abstracts and/or words in the references/bibliography (under ‘Modify your search’, top left).
For an advanced search of books on all subjects, not just law, remove the tick from the ‘Purchased’ filter on the left Your search will now find brief details of non-law titles as well as the full text of the law books.
To search a specific book, click on its title, then open the ‘Oxford Academic’ drop-down menu on the search bar and select the book title again.
To search a chapter or part of a book, open the PDF and use Ctrl-F / Command-F.
A basic search facility is available from the search bar across the top of the screen. It covers all subjects, but only the law titles are available in full. You can pull out the law books from your search results using the Subject filter, on the left.
Browsing
The filters on the left of the Advanced Search page allow you to browse by format (chapter, part, whole book), to set a date range, to select a series, and so on.
The Subject menu at the top allows you to browse by area of law, from Arbitration to Trusts. The default is to list chapters and parts of books, not whole books; you can change the format to ‘Book (see filters on the left) to display a list of entire books.
